AbstractThe area prediction through remote sensing aims to provide automatic interpretation and continuous agricultural crop monitoring. This study aimed at comparing the temporal evolution of Vegetation Index - NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) for two types of sugar cane crop fields (Ratoon crop 1 and Ratoon crop X more than 5 years old). Firstly sampling points were collected on 05/26/07 image, all of them presented bare soil, in order to compare both classes in 09/15/07 image. The result showed that Ratoon crop 1 presented NDVI average bigger than Ratoon crop X. Secondly those points were analised on 9 different dates (04/24/07, 05/26/07, 07/29/07, 08/14/07, 08/30/07, 09/15/07, 10/01/07, 03/25/08 and 04/26/08) within the crop vegetative cycle. The result showed that the NDVI index presented a relationship with crop phenology and it was possible to discriminate between Ratoon crop 1 and Ratoon crop X. Finally, stratification by Ward method was done using image of 03/25/2008, where the crop was at the peak of the vegetative cycle, in order to distribute the NDVI difference for cluster analysis. For 3 groups the result showed that the bigger class of Ratoon crop X (45,70%) was between 0,50 and 0,56, while for Ratoon crop 1 82,78% were at high NDVI value (0,57 0,68). In the future a map can be made determining areas with low NDVI which must be renewed in an effort to increase productivity in those areas.
